Why are our taxes lower at Saddle Ridge? Here are a few answers

Many visitors to Saddle Ridge wonder why we get such a wonderful break on real estate taxes.

The reasons why begin with the fact that unincorporated Saddle Ridge is geographically located in Pacific Township in Columbia County, Wisconsin.

Back in 1974, Wisconsin Power and Light Co., now known as Alliant Energy, purchased land in Pacific Township for $10 million. The power company then built a coal-fired electric generating facility. The residents of Pacific Township had all their real estate taxes paid for from the funds of this sale for the next 11 years.

But the township grew rapidly, and as a result, the funds from the sale to Wisconsin Power and Light were being reduced. At that point township property owners voted to freeze the remaining principal amount of $8.8 million and use the interest earned from that fund to offset the property owners' real estate taxes. As a result Pacific Township has been enjoying lower real estate taxes annually.

The future looks very positive for Pacific Township. Expenses will continue to be low because of Pacific's size, which is two-thirds that of the usual township in Wisconsin, and the vast acreage of our township that is held in wetland preservation by the Department of Natural Resources. The township's rezoning restrictions have put Pacific Township on the path toward planned growth. One now has to have 10 acres minimum now in order to build a home.

Pacific Township is unique and affordable place to live, especially Saddle Ridge.

The Mill Rate for the 2009 real estate tax in the town of Pacific is $11.39per 'M.'

FOR EXAMPLE: If you have a $100,000 HOME that equals $1,139.00 in taxes.
